Every stormwater pond in Metro Atlanta is filling in. The only question is how fast and how soon it will need to be dredged. The honest answer to how often you should dredge a stormwater pond is somewhere between every 7 years for a small forebay in a high-sediment watershed and every 30 years for a large basin with stable upstream conditions. Stormwater pond dredging is not on a fixed schedule like an oil change. It is driven by measured sediment depth, design storage volume, and the watershed delivering material into the basin.
Why Ponds Fill In Faster in Georgia
Georgia's red clay is fine-grained and erodes readily once disturbed. Even fully built-out neighborhoods continue to deliver sediment from yard maintenance, road wear, landscape changes, and occasional construction. We have measured sediment accumulation rates in Metro Atlanta detention ponds ranging from a quarter inch per year in stable, heavily vegetated watersheds to over two inches per year in basins that receive runoff from active construction or unstabilized slopes.
Wet detention ponds with a permanent pool tend to accumulate sediment more slowly in the deep portion because the standing water reduces resuspension, but they accumulate fastest at the inlet and forebay locations. Dry detention ponds tend to spread sediment more uniformly across the basin floor, which makes the depth measurement at any single point less representative of the overall volume loss.
The 25 Percent Rule
The general industry standard, adopted by most Metro Atlanta counties and codified in the Georgia Stormwater Management Manual, is that sediment removal is required when accumulated sediment reaches 25 percent of the design storage volume of the pond or 50 percent of the forebay volume, whichever comes first. The 25 percent threshold is not arbitrary. Calculating this requires the original design drawings, which tell you the design storage volume between the permanent pool elevation and the principal spillway crest. Without those drawings, the calculation becomes an estimate based on field measurement and reasonable assumptions, which is still defensible but less precise.

On HOAs and commercial properties we manage long-term, we typically build a forebay cleanout into the maintenance schedule every five to seven years and reserve full pond dredging for the much longer cycle. This rhythm extends the interval between major dredging events significantly, often by a decade or more, and smooths the capital cost over time.
What Pond Dredging Actually Costs
Dredging cost depends on volume, access, dewatering needs, and disposal. For a typical Metro Atlanta neighborhood pond with reasonable access, mechanical dredging in the dry runs in a predictable per-cubic-yard range. Hydraulic dredging, where slurry is pumped to a dewatering area, costs more per unit volume but works on ponds where draining is impractical. Disposal cost depends on whether the sediment can be reused on site, hauled to a landscape supplier, or must go to a regulated disposal facility based on chemical testing.
We always recommend sediment characterization sampling before any major dredging project.
