Do I have to drain my communities lake?

Thats a tough question to answer, but typically yes, you will have to drain the lake. There are some activities do not require this such as tree removal, erosion control, and some spillway repairs. However, anything to do with the dam itself especially resizing of the outlet control structure or outlet pipe replacements, will require you to drain the dam partially, or all the way.

Don't let the worst-case scenario happen. Let SCA come alongside you on the path back to compliance and safety.

Common questions of dams, responsibility, and action needed ?

Receipt of violation

Okay, so you as an individual or your community have gotten a violation about your dams condition. Most of the time, if it is a minor issue, this is from the local issuing authority. This is typically your local city, county, or a representative from Safe Dams of GA. You can find common reasons you may get a citation on the list to the right.

- Overgrown vegetation such as trees on dam

- Erosion around critical area

- Failure of major structure

- Discovery of unrecorded state dam

- Excessive sediment build up

- Safety reclassification

What do I do first?

Emergency Action plan
Engineer guidelines

If you are not sure of the severity in your violation, feel free to call SCA Construction. Depending on the complexity of the repair, you may need to obtain a set of engineered plans. Many repairs do not require a set of plans, but if this is your case, take a look at the resource tab to the right. These are sources listed on the safe dams website.

What happens if I don't do anything?

If what has been noticed is serious enough is could literally mean life of death. Dams can be a weapon of mass destruction if left on their own. Other times, it could just mean some regular fines to your community until the problem is fixed. As the dam Owner, it is your responsibility to keep the community safe.

We don't have the money!

Most local issuing authorities or LIAs for short understand that not every organization has the money on hand to pay for these repairs. It is absolutely in your best interest to get it done as soon as possible, ethically and financially. But as long as you start developing an action plan now, LIA's will normally work with you on timing of repairs.
